Friday, September 9 Rain fell in the night, but it was only a shower. However it slightly raised the river, so I went out with my trout rod and small flies and managed to kill 2 small sewin, and some fair trout. I returned to lunch and went out again afterwards: but got home again about 5 o`clock, as we had a very large lawn tennis party: and a capital dance in the Hall this evening, the same party as at the former dances being present. Friday, October 14   It blew a terrible gale in the night, with deluges rain and the wind continued throughout the day with great fury, and with heavy showers of hail and rain. I had some difficulty in getting to Tyn y groes owing to the wind but Edward drove me and Kenzie over in the [tax] cart. The river was high and milky white, but had fallen a good deal during the morning. We went up above the Meeting of the Waters and up to the Falls in the hope of evading the wind & we certainly did get sheltered above the Tyddyn y Gladys [sic]. Worm fishing was alone practicable, but it was not much use, and I only caught one sewin, but lost a nice fish. I went to the Eden late about [2?] the wind having moderated: I had not the courage to face the wind there before, so but [sic] the Eden was in fly order all day. I rose a fine salmon in one of the pools, but he would not come a second time, and half an hour afterwards the river rose a foot and was barely fishable. Kinsey finished with worm. Mawddach. Sewin 5 Trout 10

Dined at Mellynllyn [sic] tonight & slept at Tyn y groes.

Saturday, October 15

Weather cold and showery, hail and rain. Snow on the mountains. I made a start to the river soon after 7am and went to Cornelius’ pool, intending to try the Eden first. I commenced though at Cornelius‘ and had the  luck to hook a fine fish at the tail end of the pool. I played the fish for about 20 minutes,  and gaffed him myself; the fish being too large for Kinsey to get it in the net. The fish was a splendid shape, thick and fresh. I left the fish at Cornelius‘ house, and then went up the Eden, and tried many of the pools up to the factory without meeting the fish, but the river was very clear. I then returned to the Mawddach and went above the wooden bridge, and in the  gut pool  I killed a grilse of 7 pounds – a red cock. I did not meet another fish until I got to the Minor’s pool, and here I rose a nice fish 4 times, and he did not move after that. At the top of pool  below Falls I met a grilse, but he refused any other offers: both these fish rose to a large Jock Scots. I tried most of the pools down again, and did not meet another until I came to the gut pool, where I killed my grilse in the morning, and here at the tail end I moved a fine salmon with the Stevenson: he would not come a second time, although I tried him hard.  I gave up about 5, and Edward met me at Tyn y groes in the cart. The river fell but little all day, and was of a clear white colour and the bottom very clear.

Monday, June 5 Wynne and I, not expecting such a downpour as ensued, made an early start at seven over the hill to Pant glas to fish for trout, but we were not very far on our way when a tremendous downpour of rain came on. Wynne unfortunately was without a mackintosh, so very soon got wet through, I however kept tolerably dry all day with my little mackintosh. The rain was so heavy that by the time we got to Pant glas, the river was almost unfishable, and soon became completely so, however we fished rapidly down, and soon after our early lunch, we went to the Caine [sic Cain], which we found one boiling mass of foam. We could do nothing now, but start homeward, but on reaching Tyn y groes, I determined to try for sewin, to see if there were any in the river. Of course I only had my very small trout rod, with me. The weather here was in excellent trim for worm, and I crossed over to Llyn Coch where I soon killed two little silver beauties, and subsequently I caught a 3rd at the upper Bryncemlyn pool. I left about six, and walked home across the hill via Nannau; the river was getting into quite good fly order when I left, as the rain had ceased about 3. CEME Mawddach Seatrout 3 (1) 1 3/4lb. Tuesday, June 6 After breakfast at 8, Wynne and I tramped over the hill by Nannau to the Mawddach to give it a try with fly. We found the river in excellent order. I began at the Poachers Rock, whilst Wyn went up to the Bryncemlyn Rocks. I lost a good fish at Gethligemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn]. I am not sure that it was not a Grilse, as I rose it twice: I, of course, was on Vaughan`s side. I joined Wyn for lunch, and he had been equally unfortunate in losing two nice sewin. After lunch I went up as far as the first Long Pool in the Wood, having previously fished Dolgoed Pool, where I caught my only fish, and I rose two others here. I met Roma at the Meeting of the Waters, and he gave me accounts of a salmon he had lost in Eden. Subsequently I went back to Tyn y groes bridge, and the Squire met us, and drove us home. A grilse waa hooked off Tyn y groes bridge by a friend of Roma`s, and lost. Wynne saw the incident. CEME Mawddach Sea trout 1 1lb WE [Mawddach] blank. Wednesday, June 7 I walked over to the Mawddach, and found the river low, but a good colour. Continual showers throughout the day, no doubt caused the river to rise a little, and a very heavy shower came on as I was having my lunch just below Tyn y groes. I fished up as far as this from Gethigemlyn [sic Gelligemlyn], and only met 3 sewin, one of which I caught (1 3/4 lbs) and another I lost in the pool below Tyn y groes. I got up to Cornelius`s Pool about 3.45, not having stirred another fish, and I stupidly commenced to fish this pool with small sewin flies on, and very fine gut. Oh! how I regretted it, for I had not made half a dozen casts when at the edge of the Rock on which I was standing a very fine fish rolled out at my fly and I was fast on him. He evidently took the small red Irish Fly I had on at the tail. The fish was very quiet at first, and preferred sticking to the rocks, and I dared not keep a heavy strain on him. But I moved my position, and I had some hopes of killing him – I was without a gaff and all alone. After an hour`s play it got rather tedious, and I managed to move him and he made a great rush down stream only to return to his former position; again I moved him and this time all was over as he made a rush and a plunge and was off. I had however the satisfaction to find that he had not broken me after nearly an hour and a half`s play: and I think the fish from what I saw of him was quite 15lb. As I was playing him another fish rose near me three times, and I tried for him without success. Afterwards I packed up to walk home, and got in in good time. Wynne had a really good day with the trout, catching 40 – 14 of which were from Pell gelli [sic Pwll y Gele] largest 3/4lb and they were a nice show of fish. Thursday, June 8 .......I had the boat taken up in the cart to Pwll Gelli [Pwll y Gele?], and I walked up there afterwards, and began fishing about 9.30. The lake is now very full of water which made it all the better as far as the weeds were concerned. A light breeze was blowing and showers fell during the morning which turned to heavy rain in the afternoon. I had capital sport, the fish being well on the rise to a small dun on the water, but I found Wickhams Fancy doing good execution – also a red hackle Coch y bondhu with red tag. I was broken twice by good fish in the weeds, and it required some skill to keep the fish from them when hooked, however I was tolerably lucky in this respect and did not lose many. I finished till 3: but all my sport was obtained before 1.30: as there was no breeze in the afternoon and although I rose fish I could not hook them. I tried the Wnion for sewin afterwards without success: the rivers rose rapidly after the heavy rain: Trout 31. Llyn Pwllgelli (1)1lb. (1) 3/4lb. and several 1/2lb or more

Friday, June 9 I started over to the Mawddach with William Roberts soon after 8 o`clock, walking across the hill: and I found the river in grand order. Commenced at Llyn Coch with worm, but soon changed to fly, and mounted a thunder & lightning and yellow Body. Mallard Wing fly [sic], and my sport was excellent. I was lucky with the first 3 fish I killed, but I lost one fine sewin in Gethigemlyn [Gelligemlyn] from being in too great a hurry; it was here that I killed the 2 1/2lb fish. I also lost another large one higher up. Returning to Bryncemlyn Pool for the second time, at the tail end of it I rose a salmon, and hooked him the second time, but I had him on for a very short time, For he [shook?] the hook out. I ought to have changed to a double [tanlinellwyd] hookedfly. Heavy rain came on, and the river rose gradually, and I went down on the Vaughan`s side to the Gethigemlyn Ford [tanlinellwyd] when I rose a grilse 3 times – and landed him: a perfect little fish as bright as a shilling. Returning to Bryncemlyn Pool I found Griffith there, having just landed a 7 pound grilse therefrom. I went into Tyn y Groes about 6, and started William Roberts home over the hill, intending to stay the night at Tyn y groes, as I had sent for my bag. I afterwards went out and fished with worm until nearly 9 o`clock and killed two more sewin. Mawddach Grilse (1) 5 pounds. Fly yellow B Mallard W. Seatrout 6 (1) 2 1/2lbs. (1) 2 pounds (2) 1 3/4lb. Saturday, June 10 I was out on the river soon after 8, which had considerably fallen, and I tried some of the little pools but only rose one sewin, so after meeting Kinsey and Lewis Davies, I determined to walk up above, and the latter with William accompanied me [sic]. I put up a small double hooked Durham Ranger, and stuck in a fine fish at the 1st Long Pool in the wood which gave me 20 minutes exciting sport as he was very lively. I gaffed the fish myself weight10 1/2 lbs quite fresh. It is very funny but I never saw the fish take my fly, although Davies did, and I was in the act of clambering along the rock, of course I suddenly found my line tight in something! It is very lucky Davies did not shout when he say [sic. saw] the fish rise, or else a serious smash might have ensued. I fished right up to the Falls, but did not stir another fish. The Squire and Mother met me at 5:45 at Tyn y groes. I hooked a nice Sewin just above wooden bridge. Mawddach Salmon 1 10 1/2lbs Fly D. Hooked Durham Ranger. Earliest fish.

Tuesday, June 13 The weather looked unsettled this morning, and I was out before breakfast on the Wnion, and I tried both the Ford pool and Llyn y [Foutin] with small flies, but did not see a sewin. Into breakfast at 9: afterwards I started over the hill to the Mawddach and commenced fishing at Gelligemlyn: the river was low, but I expected a fish or two at the head of the pools, but I did not rise one, until I came to the Tyn y groes lower pool, Where I hooked what I think, was a large fish, however he was off in no time. Meanwhile rain had been coming down very heavily and as I was nearly wet through (having stupidly started without my mackintosh) I determined to give it up for the day, knowing full well that a heavy flood would come down, and I had neither hooks nor worms. I had my lunch before starting, and walked home quick, and went in to change, and sallied forth again about 4 enveloped in mackintosh, which was necessary, as the rain came down in torrents. Of course the rivers rose rapidly, but nevertheless it is odd I did not come across a single sewin, and trout would not bite. I tried Dolgun as well is up to the Ford Pool. A very heavy flood tonight. Wnion (Trout 3)

Wednesday, June 14. I had breakfast at 6:30, and with William Roberts made an early start to the Mawddach across the hill. I commenced fishing at 8.20 at Llyn Coch, with a worm, but soon changed to fly, and at the tail end of this pool, I cooked a nice little fresh run sewin. I fished up to Bryn cemlyn, but did nothing except rise a sewin or two, and had particular bad luck at the Tyn y groes pool, as I lost two sewin there, and rose a third. I started up to the upper water, knowing full well that it would be in excellent order, and I began at the Rock bu did not move a fish here or at the first Long Pool in the Wood, where it now being 12 o`clock I sat down for 20 minutes and had a bit of lunch. I went on up to the to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic] Pool, and at the lower part of it, I saw something break the water at my fly, a DH Durham Ranger, William Roberts saw the fish and thought it about 8lbs. Again I tried him, and he rose beautifully at the fly, but missed it. I now changed to a large DH Jack Scott`s, and meanwhile the fish rose to himself, which indicated to me to a nicety where to "put" the fly, and I had the fish firm and fast. He was a strong fish, and gave me some exciting sport, but in about half an hour, I have the satisfaction of gaffing a fresh run salmon of of 10lbs. I went on up, and fished the Minor`s pool blank, but at the tail end of the top pool below the Falls, I had the luck to stick in another good fish, though not quite so fresh as the first, but he was 11lb: and was hooked firmly on a DH Durham ranger. William Roberts landed him cleverly in the net. I had now not much more time, and I ended up with one more try at the First Long Pool in the Wood: but without results. It took down my rod with much regret, it being now three: and had a care to meet one at Tyn y groes: and I was soon home after a most enjoyable day`s sport. I left Dolserau this evening by the Mail for town, and the Squire and mother arrived from Aberyswyth [Aberystwyth sic] in the phaeton, whence they had driven, in good time to see me off. Friday, July 14 I made a start to the Mawddach soon after 8 this morning, driving up to Pen y Bont and of course I went up above towards "the Falls". The river was in high [fly? ply?] and too discoloured - in fact a bad colour for fly - I rose a nice fish in Tyddyn y Gadlys and it was the only fish I met up above. I went to latterly below the "Meeting of the Waters", and I met with Willie Griffith at the Dolcoed [sic.] Pool, and he had finished up with some success as he had 4 sewin. I tried the Railings Pool, and here caught my only fish – a nice sewin of 2 pounds. I went down to Gethigemlin [sic.] and there met Major Biknill, who had done nothing. Heavy rain came on and they went to Tyn y groes, staying there the night, as also did Griffith, and we dined together at 8:30. Mawddach Seatrout 1 (2lbs)

Monday, July 17 I made a start to the Mawddach about 8 o`clock walking over with William Roberts. The river was not at all high, but in good order and colour, but as more rain came on in the afternoon, there is no doubt it rose a little. I began well, catching the sewin of 2 1/2lbs at Bryn cemlyn Pool, 2lbs at Tyn y groes run, and another 2 1/2lbs at Llyn Coch. I also touched two or three others. I lunched at the Meeting of the Waters, and then went up and fished to Tyddyn y Gladys [sic] , and from the top pools down to Tyddyn y Gladys, and here I hooked a good fish in one of the swirls, which gave me considerable trouble in the dry channels of the pool, but the fish was well hooked, and I did not want to take him down in case of disturbing the lower portion of the pool, and with patience I got him into the net. The fly was a new pattern - yellow red blue body pigswool wing, Mallard and jungle cock feather, Hackle Blue. I tried the first Long Pool in the wood, and it being then 5.30 I went home very content with my day`s sport. Mawddach, Salmon 1 9 1/2 lbs. I met Kinsey and as he told me the Barmouth Fisherman Proudley was fishing above me with worm. I walked up above Cwm y Avon [sic. Before coming into breakfast I fished from Pughs Farm to Dolgun, and only got one sewin a small fish at Dolgun: and I lost another. After breakfast I fished up from Pughs Farm and went up to the viaduct, but I only met one sewin. I had to walk home very quickly, as I left this afternoon for Shrewsbury to attend the Assizes, the Commission being opened there today. Friday, July 28 A fine morning, but heavy rain during the day, and it was very close. I went over to Tyn y Groes, and Percy Noble accompanied me. Stupidly forgot landing net or gaff, so William Roberts went back for it in the trap and walked over the hill and joined us at Tyddyn y gladys soon after one: however I never had need to use it. Began at the Railings, but I lost two small sewin, and they caught one at the Meeting of the Waters. Went up but did not stir a fish until I came to the second pool below the Falls which I fished with Jock Scots down, and whipping back I rose a fine salmon, which however I failed to move again. I rose one or two sewin and it was a regular unlucky day for me. The rain was very heavy in the N: and both the Eden and Cemlyn came down heavy, and I am sorry now that I did not stay below. Saturday, July 29, 1882 I was up very early and went out on the river, which was in good order for small flies. I began at the Ford, and seeing the cormorant, I took the trouble to go back and get a gun, but on returning, I did not see the bird, and it must have gone up to the Big Pool. I came in to breakfast and went out again afterwards and fished up to Bont Newydd: and had some good sport with the trout, killing 26 and a small sewin. I rose several sewin, one or two at the crooked Pool and a very good one at Fronwion. Home about 2.30, and we played lawn tennis all the afternoon, the weather being perfect, very sunny and clear, too fine to last. After tennis, I went up to the Big Pool and had a very nice bathe. Charlie Owen came to dinner this evening. Wnion: Trout 26 Sea trout 1

Monday, July 31st. Lewis Self and I breakfasted at 8, and then went up to Pwll-y-gelli [sic], and Edward brought the boat up for us in the [cart?]. A nice breeze was blowing during the morning, and we picked up some nice trout, but lost several in the weeds, and the best one I lost by not having the landing net in the boat. At 1:30 the others came up with the lunch, and I`ve had a very pleasant picnic, that we only just escaped the rain. We could not do any good on the Lake in the afternoon, so we went down to the river, and I tried a few pools for Sewin without success, but I came in early, as the Selfs left for Myn[sic]-y-don at 5.30, and I wished to see them off.

Wednesday, August 2nd Very rainy morning, so after breakfast at 9:30 I went to the Mawddach, walking over to Gelligemlyn. The river was rather low so I began with small flies, and caught one sewin at Gelligemlyn, and two at Llyn Coch, and when I was here the river rose rapidly so I cut up to [the] "Meeting of the Waters" where I had my lunch, and then walked straight up to the Falls to fish down. At the 1st Pool below the Falls I rose a nice fish, but he would not come again. I had only time to fish the best pools down, and that rather hurriedly and I only moveda sewin or two Williams of Tyn-y-groes drove me home, and I wanted to be in pretty good time as Alex M`Miching arrived. Mawddach. Sea trout 3 (1) 1 1/2 lbs

Thursday, August 3rd. A very fine day. M`Micking and I went out on the on the Wnion this morning and I went from Dolgun right up the river to the viaduct, but only rose two sewin: I think it was too bright. I came in at 3, and had my lunch and the M`Micking turned up later, and we neither of us had sport, except I got some Brown trout . The others had gone to Barmouth, and returned at 4, and I had some very good lawn tennis.....

Saturday, August 5 We had arranged to go up Cader today, but they day did not look very promising, as there was a thick mist on the mountain. "Peter" M`Micking and I bathed this morning, and we started in the carriage for Dolgellau about 10, and picked up Mrs Lewis Self there, who came with us. We got three ponies from the Angel, and rode them up to the place we started from beyond Llyn Crogennan. The mist hung very thickly on the hill, and it was not long before we were enveloped in it. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to get to the top, where we had some shelter and had a capital lunch. We lost Pugh our guide going down, and it was not difficult to miss the way. The mist rose a little, but we really saw no view the whole day. The Ladies were rather tired after the expedition. It cleared, and became beautifully fine this evening. I went down to the Ford Pool for half an hour before dinner with M`Micking, and I hooked a small sewin there, and tried the "crooked pool" and "Pool in the Hollow" without success.

Tuesday, August 15 A wet morning, and all hopes of going to Llanymawddwy were abandoned, so Gwen Price and I went to the river which of course was in order. It rose suddenly as we commenced fishing, and came down dirty, so we tried below Tyn y Groes with worm, but the sewin biting very badly, and although I hooked several, I only got one small one, as did Tommy. We lunched at the "Meeting of the Waters", and as it cleared I determined to go up to the Falls, while Tommy fished down to Tyn y Groes. I found the river too high, and showers kept it up. I did not rise a fish, but killed a sewin 2 1/2 pounds at Tyddyn y Gladys Pool. Douglas Williams caught a nice little grilse at the "Ford Pool" on worm. Mawddach. Sea trout 3 (1) 2 1/2 pounds. Wnion. Douglas Williams Grilse. 1 3 lb 6 oz
